Abandoned Rail Trail | Glacier National Park, BC

Hello friends,

Today I bring you pictures from a short hike in Glacier National Park! We went on a easy 2.4km round trip hike on an abandoned railway in Rogers Pass.

Rogers Pass is a high mountain pass through the Selkirk Mountains of BC! It was used by the Canadian Pacific Railway, as well as the Trans-Canada Highway. It was very cool to walk through there. There were still original parts of the railway scattered throughout the trail as well as little signs that explained the entire history of the railway along the hike.

These are the original beams that held up the Canadian Pacific Railway. They don’t look huge in the pictures, but they are! We could not even get a picture of us standing next to them without cutting the top of the beam out of the frame!

Avalanche!

Avalanches are very common in Glacier National Park. There are many tunnels on the highway as well as the railway to prevent trains and vehicles from being buried in an avalanche. Large areas of this park actually get closed when they are trying to control avalanches with explosives.

Rogers Pass receives an average of 10 meters of snowfall in the treeline each winter, so you can just imagine the amount of avalanche control that needs to happen in Glacier National Park each year!

I suggest watching your footing if you end up going on this hike because parts of the path are not that smooth, but I do think that if you are in the area it is a lovely short hike to go on with lots of history behind it!

Let me know if you have ever gone on this hike in the comments below!

Until next time,

xoxo
