Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Hello friends,

Today I am writing the about the main two ways that I have traveled so far! And to be honest I have never actually been on a train, let alone traveled on one … I titled it that because of an older movie I use to watch with my mom. She loves one of the main actors in it (John Candy); she made me a fan of him too.

Anyways back to the purpose of the post! The two main ways that I travel are by vehicle or plane. Both for different reasons though. Growing up, every summer we would drive from Alberta to Ontario, which took roughly 4 days of driving. As well, we would drive to either Edmonton, Calgary, or Red Deer (anywhere from 4.5-8 hrs) every other weekend for our dance and gymnastics competitions! (Yes I know …. bless my parents for doing this for us) To most people a long drive is a couple of hours, which is really nothing at all to me!

I love road trips now because of how I was raised. When we would drive across Canada, we would stop at cool little restaurants, shops, petting zoos and even cool little look offs or lakes. At times yes, I would be annoyed with how much further we had to go, but I truly did enjoy looking out the window at all the scenery, plus we always had at least one dog in the car with us! We have even traveled with fish and hedgehogs before too! And one time we even rescued a turtle from crossing the highway. We named it escape (pronounced with a french accent… ) because we put it in this big container and it escaped in our van during the night! We even bought it turtle food from the pet store.. all my moms idea…dad was not impressed with how much this wild turtle costed us! haha

My thoughts are, I can’t jump out of a plane and take a cool picture of the landscape or an animal I see on the drive, but I can stop the car to take one! Well I mean, I guess people do jump out of planes … but that is something completely different!

Now I will talk about plane rides though. Planes are very very cool, however I can never seem to sleep on them. I think that planes are obviously very good for super far distances, such as over seas, but you don’t get to see as much or enjoy travelling as much. Yes you do get to have a cool aerial view if its a clear day, but as we all know there are lots of clouds in the sky usually ๐Ÿ™‚ With driving there is also not the hassle of the airport (security, overweight bags, late planes, special people getting to board before you, crying babies, etc. etc.) But, I will admit they are convenient if you want to explore and travel the world! Also, hopefully you can rack up enough points on your visa to get free flights! Woohoo!

So wrapping up, there are pros and cons to both driving and flying it just purely depends on the individual! And of course the trip! I have met some people that could not care less about the scenery on the way to their destination, which is totally fine. I am the opposite though, I really like to have a good travel day and that includes enjoying the scenery along the way and making goofy memories! … I have a few too many of those from when I was growing up, but I would not have it any other way!

I hope you enjoyed this post. I know it was quite different from my normal ones, but maybe I will have another post go up on the weekend sometime as a bonus! (One with some pictures ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) Let me know if you prefer driving or flying to your destinations in the comments below. Or if you have also traveled by train you can add it in to your ranking!

Until next time,

xoxo

  1. I like driving because it is peaceful and I get to think. Also because I don’t ever drink or do anything to escape my mind I can drive 24 hours a day. People here now in an emergency I am safer and more reliable than the police or ambulance

  2. Great post! I admit I much prefer to travel by auto. We must be kindred spirits as my parents also took me on a lot of road trips too. And I too always enjoyed the scenery.

I guess I like the freedom too. If I want to stop and explore, I can. I really enjoy my truck and trailer. I have my home with me, so I am always comfortable.

I don’t really enjoy flying much anymore for the same reasons you stated. The airlines used to treat us like passengers, now they treat us like cattle.

Thanks for your wonderful story. Keep writing. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I definitely prefer a road trip over a flight. My husband is asleep almost as soon as he sits down ๐Ÿคฃ but, like you, I have trouble sleeping on a plane.

The advantages of a road trip are all of the ones you mention, but my husband and I also like our time alone together without any other distractions. Weโ€™ve rented cars in many of the countries weโ€™ve travelled to and it always ends up a highlight of the trip.
